Left the hotel in Boerne and got to Comfort about 8:30 feeling pretty good. My legs weren't sore at all from the previous day's activity (rattler report to come tomorrow.) Did a little pre-ride with Wink and a few others and I could feel that my legs weren't 100% but they didn't feel to bad.

Pulled up to the line and was in the front. Whistle went off I was 2nd through the first turn - great start. Shortly after 2 guys came around and I was in 4th. No big deal I'm still in a good spot. Gap opened quickly between 2nd and 1st. Then a gap started opening between 2nd and 3rd once we got to the rocky single track. I made a pass and closed down 2nd. That was about 10min in to the race and it's when I noticed that my legs were starting to fade fast. I remember thinking, "We're in trouble now and there's nothing I can do." In the next couple of minutes the ground turned upward and my placement went back-back-back... Quickly I found myself in 8th and there was nothing I could do about it. During the rock garden at about 15min I didn't have anything left in my legs. I let the rest of the field go by. I figured I just ride it out and try to have fun. My inner voice said "get off this trail before we get hurt, we have no business out here." Seconds later I was making my way up one of the rock sections and I couldn't generate any power for momentum and actually fell over while trying to navigate the rocks. A few expletives later and with some nice deep scratches on my leg I was rolling down the trail with a new mission, find the fastest way to the front. I came up on a jeep road and descended down the upper section until I got to the main road and found my way back to the front. DNF. I was a little frustrated but at the same time it was a fantasy to think I could have gone out there and been competitive after the Rattler. Maybe next year.

Comfort-2, Don-0!
